Brant Point Light (Nantucket)

Brant Point Light was the second lighthouse established in colonial America. It has since been moved and rebuilt more times than any other lighthouse in the Nation. The present lighthouse is the ninth one built on Brant Point.

Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse (Stuart FL)

The Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse was authorized in 1853 . Soon after the lighthouse was authorized, engineers discovered that a storm had closed the inlet. The inside waters became stagnant, breeding malaria. Moreover, the unarmed work crews were delayed by the eruption of the Third Seminole Indian War. When the project finally got underway, construction materials had to be brought down the Indian River in small, shallow-draft barges. The majority of work on the 108-foot lighthouse, adjacent oil house, and keepers’ house were completed in less than six months. The tower was officially lit on July 10, 1860.

Red Gennaker

A gennaker is a downwind sail that is basically somewhere between an oversized genoa and a spinnaker. It is not symmetric like a true spinnaker but asymmetric like a genoa, but the gennaker is not attached to the forestay like a jib or genoa. The gennaker is rigged like a spinnaker

Whitby Castle, Rye New York

Architect A.J. Davis designed Whitby castle as a residence in 1852 and the building is said to contains stones from Whitby Abbey, a 13th-ceuntry North Yorkshire, England ruin. The property was private until 1921, which is when it became part of the Rye Country Club. The City of Rye purchased the property in 1965 and created the Rye Golf Club. .

SunkenForest

The Sunken Forest is a rare maritime holly forest and preserve that is part of the Fire Island National Seashore (a National Park) . This painting was inspired in part by the many years that Mel spent visiting Fire Island and Sailors Haven on his boat with his family in the early 1970s.

Sabino

Still active in Mystic Connecticut, Sabino is the oldest wooden, coal-fired steamboat in regular operation. She was built in 1908 in East Boothbay, Maine, and spent most of her career ferrying passengers and cargo between Maine towns and islands on Damariscotta River in midcoast Maine. She is still powered by the two-cylinder steam engine installed in 1908.
